Gov Fintiri Commissions Ultra-Modern Yola Market, Names Landmark Project After Modibbo Adama

Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has commissioned the newly rebuilt Modibbo Adama Modern Market in Yola, marking a major milestone in the state’s drive to transform its commercial infrastructure and end years of recurring market disasters.

The governor described the project as a decisive and long-term solution to the persistent fire outbreaks, poor sanitation, and disorder that plagued the old Yola Market, which had led to repeated losses for traders over the years.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Fintiri said his administration chose to confront the root causes of the market’s challenges rather than attributing them to myths or superstitions. He emphasized that the new facility was deliberately designed to ensure safety, improve hygiene, and create a structured environment for business activities.

He recalled visiting the site following one of the devastating fire incidents and assured traders at the time that the market would be rebuilt into a modern commercial hub an assurance he said has now been fulfilled.

The governor further highlighted that the project was executed entirely by indigenous contractors from Adamawa State, demonstrating the capacity of local professionals to deliver high-quality infrastructure when given the opportunity and proper oversight.

Key Features of the Modibbo Adama Modern Market

  • 936 total shops
  • 816 lock-up shops and 120 open shops
  • Wider access roads for easy movement and emergency response
  • Fully equipped fire service station
  • Comprehensive water reticulation system with overhead tanks
  • Strategically installed fire hydrants
  • Strengthened perimeter fencing for improved security
  • Desilted drainage systems
  • Modern toilet and sanitation facilities
  • Dedicated administrative block for market management

Governor Fintiri disclosed that while the traders’ union initially submitted a list of 307 affected traders, the government expanded the allocation to 350 beneficiaries to ensure inclusiveness and fairness.

He called on traders to take full ownership of the facility by maintaining cleanliness and safeguarding public infrastructure, stressing that sustainability depends on collective responsibility.

The governor also directed the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industries to put in place competent facility managers to oversee security, sanitation, and daily operations of the market.

In recognition of the historical significance of the Adamawa Emirate, Governor Fintiri announced that the market will now be officially known as the Modibbo Adama Modern Market, Yola (MAMMY).

He formally declared the market open for business, expressing confidence that the new facility will boost commercial activities, improve the business environment, and drive economic growth across the state.
